Created by contemporary glass artist Terri Albanese, A Garden of Gratitude is an art exhibition of original glass paintings
that symbolizes the heart and soul of our hospital workers.
Although silent, flowers speak a language of their own—they can speak louder than words,
as they evoke powerful emotions through their color, shape, and scent.
In centuries past, flowers were used to convey messages that women could not say aloud.
Today, in this exhibition, Terri is using flowers to convey a message of gratitude.
Her glass paintings feature flowers that symbolize the attributes shared by our healthcare workers—
resilience, inner strength, hope, courage, compassion, self-sacrifice, and dedication.
To all of you who have made this exhibition possible.
You recognize the connection between art + healing. Thank you.

Instantly recognized for its captivating blooms and fragile beauty, a peony symbolizes compassion—
the feeling that arises when confronted with another’s suffering, and the deep desire to alleviate the suffering.
The peony derived its name from Paeon, the physician to the Greek gods and apprentice to Asclepius, the god of healing and medicine. Paeon discovered a magical root growing on Mount Olympus that would soothe the pain of women in childbirth. Asclepius became jealous that Paeon would soon overshadow his popularity and vowed to kill him. But, Zeus was watching.
Out of compassion, to save Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius, Zeus turned Paeon into a blushing peony flower.
To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your remarkable and comforting compassion.

Radiant, striking, full of joy, and known as the flower of the sun, a sunflower symbolizes dedication and devotion.
As the sunflower slowly turns and follows the sun across the summer sky, it provides an image of true loyalty. No matter how small or how little light there is, sunflowers seek out the light of the sun—and, in turn, bring light to us all.
To our wounded healers—we are grateful you have dedicated your lives to being the light in the darkest of times.

an incredible strength that pushes them forward to overcome challenges beyond what we can imagine.
To our wounded healers—we are grateful as you willingly and courageously persevered, day, after day, after day.

With a simple and pure beauty, cherry blossoms symbolize sacrifice.
Blooming in the hundreds as tiny, delicately colored blossoms, cherry blossoms are one of the most beautiful sights to behold in Spring. In all their beauty, they joyfully and willingly sacrifice their nectar to butterflies and pollen to bees. Our wounded healers are a beautiful symbol of self-sacrifice. They have tirelessly given of themselves and provided care, hope, and comfort to our loved ones—while they silently struggled themselves. They knew they had to go on.
To our wounded healers—we are grateful for the unimaginable personal sacrifices you have made.

As if it is nodding in deep thought, the charming and delicate pansy symbolizes thoughtfulness.

Arising from the snow, they have withstood adversity—they have endured the harsh, dark, long winter and are the first to bloom and tell of the coming of Spring. With its early bloom, a crocus symbolizes resilience. Our wounded healers withstood adversity—they carried themselves, and they carried each other during the pandemic. The remarkable resilience found within each of them enabled them to continue to care for others.

Colorful and mysterious, the iris symbolizes courage.
Buried deep within the soil, an iris finds the courage to face the unknown. Has winter left and Spring arrived? A tiny blade of green shoots up and pushes through the soil to become a leaflet. The leaflet reaches towards the sun and opens wide to show a bud—
and soon, petal by petal, the iris has the courage to open in full bloom.
To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your undaunted courage, as you faced the unknown to care for others.

To our wounded healers—we are forever grateful.
