Created by contemporary glass artist Terri Albanese, A Garden of Gratitude is an art exhibition of original glass paintings

that symbolizes the heart and soul of our hospital workers.

Although silent, flowers speak a language of their own—they can speak louder than words,

as they evoke powerful emotions through their color, shape, and scent.

In centuries past, flowers were used to convey messages that women could not say aloud.

Today, in this exhibition, Terri is using flowers to convey a message of gratitude.

Her glass paintings feature flowers that symbolize the attributes shared by our healthcare workers—

resilience, inner strength, hope, courage, compassion, self-sacrifice, and dedication.

I am so grateful to all of you who have made this exhibition possible.

You recognize the connection between art + healing. Thank you.

compassion shared

Instantly recognized for its captivating blooms and fragile beauty, a peony symbolizes compassion—

the feeling that arises when confronted with another’s suffering, and the deep desire to alleviate the suffering.

The peony derived its name from Paeon, the physician to the Greek gods and apprentice to Asclepius, the god of healing and medicine. Paeon discovered a magical root growing on Mount Olympus that would soothe the pain of women in childbirth. Asclepius became jealous that Paeon would soon overshadow his popularity and vowed to kill him. But, Zeus was watching.

Out of compassion, to save Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius, Zeus turned Paeon into a blushing peony flower.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your remarkable and comforting compassion.

light in bloom

Radiant, striking, full of joy, and known as the flower of the sun, a sunflower symbolizes dedication and devotion.

As the sunflower slowly turns and follows the sun across the summer sky, it provides an image of true loyalty. No matter how small or how little light there is, sunflowers seek out the light of the sun—and, in turn, bring light to us all.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful you have dedicated your lives to being the light in the darkest of times.

persevere together

With stunning blossoms and a delicate scent, a magnolia flower is resistant and strong—it is a symbol of perseverance.

Overcoming the hard winter’s cold, the magnolia perseveres, waiting for Spring. This same perseverance can be found in our healthcare workers—

an incredible strength that pushes them forward to overcome challenges beyond what we can imagine.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful as you willingly and courageously persevered, day, after day, after day.

a diligent heart

With a simple and pure beauty, cherry blossoms symbolize sacrifice.

Blooming in the hundreds as tiny, delicately colored blossoms, cherry blossoms are one of the most beautiful sights to behold in Spring. In all their beauty, they joyfully and willingly sacrifice their nectar to butterflies and pollen to bees. Our wounded healers are a beautiful symbol of self-sacrifice. They have tirelessly given of themselves and provided care, hope, and comfort to our loved ones—while they silently struggled themselves. They knew they had to go on.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for the unimaginable personal sacrifices you have made.

in thoughtful ways

As if it is nodding in deep thought, the charming and delicate pansy symbolizes thoughtfulness.

Its name comes from the French word pensée,

meaning one’s thought—showing a deep consideration for others and bringing comfort and good to those in need.

To our wounded healers—

we are grateful for your loving hearts and profound thoughtfulness.

an early spring snow

Arising from the snow, they have withstood adversity—they have endured the harsh, dark, long winter and are the first to bloom and tell of the coming of Spring. With its early bloom, a crocus symbolizes resilience. Our wounded healers withstood adversity—they carried themselves, and they carried each other during the pandemic. The remarkable resilience found within each of them enabled them to continue to care for others.

To our wounded healers—

we are grateful for your extraordinary resilience. You carried us through.

A selfless love

Elegant and breathtakingly beautiful, it appears as if they float above calm waters.

The exquisite water lily symbolizes selflessness—the act of willingly giving to others before yourself.

As our healthcare workers cared for the suffering, they endlessly put the needs of others before their own—without expectations and without conditions.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful to you who continue to give selflessly and fearlessly.

bringing peace

An anemone with  delicate and shapely petals symbolizes inner peace—

the light-filled place within that keeps us strong in the face of suffering and adversity. Inner peace is not dependent on outer conditions, but it arises from within—it dwells within our hearts. It is a state of calm despite the presence of challenges.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for the inner peace you have graciously shared.

with patience

With a delicate beauty, orchids bring with them a sense of grace and elegance—

they symbolize patience.

In the midst of chaos, the patience of our healthcare workers kept us anchored. With composure, they willingly fought this pandemic while they fought back their tears—they had the patience to continue

to care, to give, to listen, and to comfort others.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your extraordinary and inexhaustible patience.

an inner beauty

Size:  31" x 21"  |  $3,800

out of the storm

The word calla originates from the Greek word for beauty, kallos.

Known throughout the world for its beauty and elegance, the calla lily symbolizes inner beauty—a true beauty that can be seen and felt by everyone. The beauty found deep within—within our heart, mind, and soul. It is a beauty associated with faithfulness and the caring that one lovingly gives.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your tender and peaceful inner beauty.

Size:  12" x 12"  |  $1,600

courage that endures

Colorful and mysterious, the iris symbolizes courage.

Buried deep within the soil, an iris finds the courage to face the unknown. Has winter left and Spring arrived? A tiny blade of green shoots up and pushes through the soil to become a leaflet. The leaflet reaches towards the sun and opens wide to show a bud—

and soon, petal by petal, the iris has the courage to open in full bloom.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your undaunted courage, as you faced the unknown to care for others.

this one tells the story

With brilliant, bold, and cloud-like blooms, hydrangeas are a symbol of gratitude. Gratitude comes deep from within us—it’s not just an emotion, it’s also a choice we can make, and it can become a way of thinking. When we come together to share our gratitude, it opens the hearts of those around us, regardless of what comes their way.

Take a moment, look around, and thank a healthcare worker. You won’t have to look far.

To our wounded healers—we are forever grateful.

interwoven

Stunningly beautiful white tulips are a sign Spring has arrived and they symbolize hope.

Spring is the bridge between the darkness of winter and the warm light of summer. With Spring comes light, with light comes hope— and hope is the bridge between darkness and light.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for you; you are a bridge of hope.

when grace is shared

With its pure, snow-white petals and captivating fragrance,

jasmine symbolizes grace and a healing touch.

The name jasmine is a derivative of the Persian name “Yasmin,” which means “gift from God.”

With their healing touch and lovely grace, they freely give to others and expect nothing in return—

they are a gift from God.

To our wounded healers—we are grateful for your quiet grace and gentle healing touch.
